so this is abstract art... you say. It's really cool as an image and art piece. But it is more pop than abstract, i'd say, because of the use of comic language. First thing on my mind.

Congratulations.

I agree with sacre. It is not really an abstract style.
Here is a definition of abstract art:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_art

And the original brief said: "Lets shake things up, and go abstract! How can we tell stories and give messages, in a subtle and non-figurative way?" .......So I do not understand if any figurative art works would make it into selection....

Not to cause a ruckus but these guys do have a point.
One look at the voting page and it's hard not to notice
the motley of styles present..ranging all the way from
abstract to photographic to pop to illustrative.
Not, I'm sure, because of some arrogant disregard
of the contest guidelines on the part of the competitors
but in their eagerness to get their art exposed some may
not have been aware that there was even a contest going on.

So, just a suggestion here...but what if you screen the art
that gets submitted? Or better yet...designate a special section
just for the contest submissions and leave the regular
voting page as it is?

The yays choose the pieces, that's a fact. I just don't see the point of a guideline if later an off-the-guideline piece can make it. May be if it were clearer that the guideline is a suggestion instead of (like I thought) a strong direction.

I have to say, I'm new here and when I found this site I submitted the first piece I thought about. In the hurry I didn't notice the going abstract thing. Being awared of this, I sent new pieces and started voting keeping in mind how the abstract concept operated in the mind of the artist. About the 3rd winner, I dind't vote nay beacause I thought it was interesting, but didn't vote yay neither because like I said, I considered it off the topic. Christine had a good idea, it solves the dilema.

Sorry if my english is broken.

hmmm...... after thinking about it, yeah, I have to agree with the last few comments. Like Sacre said, it's a really cool image, and great as a piece of art, but abstract it isn't. When I voted for this piece, I have to admit, I forgot about the brief and if the work fitted it or not, I'm sure many other people did the same. Now Exitman, I'm not taking away from your work in amy way, I still think it's great, it just doesn't respond to the brief given.

I agree with Christine on the use of a separate section for the running competition. I actually thought the art was screened before it got through?

I agree with you as well. Good work as I sad before but is more figurative, than abstract. You know what, all places on the Internet, which offer a "creative competitions" are "extremely funny", mathematical and business driven. The wrong thing is desperate artists and designers lending their work for free and making websites very popular. They should pay us royalties for publishing our work because we are giving them ideas, trends and know how and overall because of that, bringing a huge profit to them. They do not need to employ you or pay for your hard work because you are giving it for free. Globally, it is an awful situation, which has to be changed.

Thanks for all the comments. I'll be the first from the team to say that we need to be better at handling these competitions with a specific theme in the future. There needs to be more information. Both when people are voting and when submitting.

Micelinio: We do pay artists royalties for anything we sell. But I truly hope that you are here for more than just the money. Sharing has a lot other benefits than the monetary ones.

Hi all,
To mirror a few of you, thanks for your comment :D I guess its not a Yay this time, but as you all know, people can also Nay here at YayArt..

Now, firstly I'd like to say that anyone who are accepted into our competition, naturally have a chance to win, otherwise it wouldn't make sense. And the piece in question was the piece with the highest rating, so according to the YayArt concept, it deserves to win.

However, I agree with a lot of you, and we will try to improve on this. Its not entirely tranparrent, if you should vote for a piece in relation to the competition or not. We will try to make come up with a good model for it when our programmer comes back from holidays. Untill then, vote as allways.

As a final note I'd like to add that this is not the first time in history somebody broke the rules - and won.. I'm just saying :)

Cheers all
